Course 3: Empathetic Listening, Connecting to Others with Compassion

Course overview

Come along to our professional development workshop, Empathic listening, Connecting to others with compassion, introducing a process for responding compassionately to the pain in others’ words. The course is tailored to Translators and Interpreters who want to listen empathically to clients/employers when conflict and tension is present. You’ll earn to be a supportive presence and de-escalate heightened emotions. Enjoy a fun and easy going experience, where you’ll get a feel for and practice the art of listening empathically

What you will learn

• recognise ‘hard to hear’ messages;

• hear the feelings and needs behind the pain;

• practice responding with empathy;

• sense into the regulating impact of receiving empathy

Preparation

• This tutorial is taken completely online

• We will provide a link to the Zoom meeting upon enrolment

• This tutorial requires a computer and internet connection

While there is no required reading for this course, you may find it useful to read Marshall Rosenberg’s 2015 Nonviolent Communication : A language of Life, Puddle Dancer Press.

Facilitator

You will progress through the courses in an online class of like-minded peers interested in social learning and peer support all under the close guidance of Elizabeth Thomson as your facilitator.

Cost

The 90 minute teacher-led tuition: AUD$100.
